Me he topado ya en un montón de publicaciones ya sean especializadas ó no el nombre de Joe Strummer.
En algunas anunciando la titulada en español “La vida y muerte de un cantante, Joe Strummer” ó en su titulo original “The future is unwritten, Joe Strumer”, película-documental-musical de Julián Temple , el 4 de Abril se estrenó. Búscala, merece la pena.
Y en otra debido a la edición especial de una Fender, la “Joe Strummer Telecaster”, que incluye un kit personalizado con los gráficos de Shepard Fairey. Una pasada vamos.

"John Graham Mellor (Ankara, Turquía, 21 de agosto de 1952 – Somerset, Inglaterra, 22 de diciembre de 2002) más conocido como Joe Strummer, fue el co-fundador, compositor, cantante y guitarrista de la banda punk británica The Clash y, luego, de The Mescaleros.

El 3 de abril de 1976, la por entonces desconocida banda Sex Pistols tocó en un show londinense junto a varios otros grupos, entre los cuales se encontraba The 101'ers. Poco después de la presentación, el mánager, Bernie Rhodes, y el guitarrista, Mick Jones, del grupo London SS se acercaron a Strummer con el objetivo de incorporarlo como cantante a una nueva banda. En palabras textuales, le dijeron "Eres bueno, pero tu grupo es una mierda". Strummer pronto se unió a la banda que fue reformada con Jones en guitarra, Paul Simonon en bajo, Keith Levene en segunda guitarra y Terry Chimes en batería. El nuevo grupo se llamó The Clash, nombre ideado por Simonon, e hizo su debut el 4 de julio de 1976 abriendo para los Sex Pistols en The Black Swan, hoy conocido como The Boardwalk, en Sheffield. El 25 de enero de 1977 la banda firmó contrato con CBS Records, a pesar de haber sufrido las idas de Levene y Chimes. Poco después, Topper Headon se convirtió en el baterista completando así la alineación clásica.
The Clash fue la banda musicalmente más diversa de la primera ola del punk y a la vez la más politizada de todas. Sus canciones, usualmente compuestas por Mick Jones y el propio Strummer, trataban temas como la decadencia social, el desempleo, el racismo, la brutalidad policial, la represión política y social, el militarismo y, en algunos casos particulares, el sexo. Strummer estaba involucrado en las campañas de la liga Anti-nazi y del "Rock Contra el Racismo". La importancia a nivel musical de The Clash se evidencia en la elección de su álbum London Calling como mejor disco de los años '80 por la revista Rolling Stone y en la influencia que ha ejercido el grupo en una gran cantidad de bandas de rock u otros géneros como el hip-hop, rubro en el cual Public Enemy los cita como una influencia muy importante.
Durante su participación con The Clash, Strummer, al igual que sus compañeros, tuvo sucesivos conflictos con la ley. El 10 de junio de 1977, fue arrestado junto a Topper Headon por pintar "The Clash" con aerosol en la pared de un hotel. A su vez, a mediados de los '80 fue nuevamente arrestado por golpear con su guitarra a un fanático violento durante un recital en Hamburgo, Alemania.
En septiembre de 1983, luego de varios conflictos internos en el grupo, Strummer emitió el tristemente célebre "Clash Communique", que anunciaba la expulsión de Mick Jones. Poco antes, Topper Headon también había sido separado por su adicción a la heroína. A pesar de los problemas, la banda incorporó nuevos miembros y continuó gracias a la insistencia de Strummer. Hacia 1985 emitieron el álbum Cut the Crap pero luego de las malas críticas y el repudio de los fans, Joe Strummer dio por finalizado a The Clash.

Strummer falleció el 22 de diciembre de 2002 en su casa de Broomfield en Somerset, a causa de una falla cardíaca congénita no diagnosticada. Su inesperada muerte a los 50 años de edad fue un duro golpe para el amplio espectro de fanáticos a los que su figura había inspirado.
Para el momento de su muerte, Strummer se encontraba trabajando en un álbum con The Mescaleros que se emitió póstumo en octubre de 2003 con el título Streetcore. Entre otros temas, el disco contenía un tributo a Johnny Cash ("Long Shadow"), una canción recordando los atentados del 11 de septiembre de 2001 y el cover del clásico "Redemption Song" de Bob Marley, esta última grabada a dúo con Cash. Desgraciadamente, Strummer no tuvo la oportunidad de completar las partes vocales de una gran cantidad de temas, incluyendo "Dakar Meantime", que interpretó en vivo algunas veces antes de su muerte.
En los premios Grammy de febrero de 2003, "London Calling" fue interpretada por Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen, Steven van Zandt, Dave Grohl, Pete Thomas y Tony Kanal como tributo a Strummer. Para marzo de ese año, The Clash fue inducido al Salón de la Fama del Rock.
A lo largo de su carrera, Strummer se destacó por su devoción hacia sus seguidores. De hecho, se dice que jamás abandonó un local luego de un concierto sin antes haber firmado autógrafos y hablado con todos los que lo hubieran estado esperando, a pesar de que este proceso pudiera durar horas. Con relación a esto, en una ocasión en la que era llevado al hospital por un golpe en su pierna hizo parar la ambulancia para hablar con algunos fans que lo seguían de cerca.
En 2006, se emitió un documental de Dick Rude titulado Let's Rock Again! en el que se muestran anécdotas de la gira de The Mescaleros para su álbum Global a Go-Go. Ese mismo año, la banda de Nueva Orleans Cowboy Mouth hizo una canción llamada "Joe Strummer" para su álbum Voodoo Shoppe en la que se narra la historia de un hombre que deja a su novia porque ella "no sabe quién fue Joe Strummer". El tema ganó significativa popularidad en la radiofonía americana durante un tiempo.
Además de su música, Strummer colaboró en la creación de Future Forests (luego renombrado como The Carbon Neutral Company) que es una organización dedicada a la plantación de árboles alrededor del mundo con el objeto de combatir el calentamiento global".

The new group was called The Clash, Simonon devised by name, and made his debut on July 4, 1976 opening for the Sex Pistols in The Black Swan, now known as The Boardwalk in Sheffield. On January 25, 1977 banda signed the contract with CBS Records, despite having suffered trips Levene and Chimes. Shortly thereafter, Topper Headon became the drummer thus completing the alignment classic. The Clash was the banda musically more diverse in the first wave of punk and yet the most politicized of all. Their songs, usually composed by Mick Jones and Strummer himself, trying topics such as social decay, unemployment, racism, police brutality, political and social repression, militarism and, in some cases, sex. Strummer was involved in the campaigns of the Anti-Nazi League and the "Rock Against Racism."
