Triumph recupera este nombre para una nueva moto con bicilíndrico de 1600c.c. con aires custom. Esta no era la filosofía de los modelos aparecidos antaño bajo esta denominación, y las opiniones son escépticas entre los admiradores de la marca.
Yo era de los que se rasgaba las vestiduras al respecto, sin embargo, ya le voy cogiendo el puntillo a esta moto.
La primera Thunderbird apareció en 1949 (20 de Septiembre) y fue diseñada por Turner y Wickes. Se hizo muy popular en competición y... como moto de policía por todos los estados de los EE.UU. Y, por cierto, el nombre es debido al Thunderbird Hotel de Carolina del Sur en el que el Sr. Turner se hospedó durante una gira por EE.UU.
Esta moto estuvo en producción hasta 1966. A partir de ahí otras máquinas con configuración similar tomaron su relevo en la marca (bicilíndrica de 650c.c. fabricada en Meriden. En cualquier caso quedará inmortalizada en nuestras retinas como la máquina de Brando en "Salvaje".
Entre 1981 y 1983 se recupera fugazmente la denominación para una nueva bicilíndrica de 650 (la TR65) que podéis ver en la foto en B&N.
En el último y definitivo resurgir de la marca, vuelve junto con otras modernas cláscias como la Bonnie o la Scrambler, la Tbird (1995). Esta vez con el tricilíndrico de 900c.c. fabricado en Hinckley
Más adelante, en 1998, sale en versión Sport amarillo/negro y rojo/negro con el escape doble por el lado derecho. Finalmente se produjo una versión blanca/naranja de nuevo con un escape por cada lado. Poco después se dejó de fabricar y... hasta el año q viene.
También hubo una rareza como esta...
