LONDON CALLING. The Clash,1980.
En 1979, los Clash eran la mejor banda de punk británica: feroces en sus planteamientos ideológicos, incandescentes en directo, imbatibles en disco, disparaban singles a lo mas alto de las listas con una regularidad abrumadora.
Pero también estaban contra la pared: endeudados, sin mánager y en medio de una guerra abierta con su compañía, la CBS. Esa primavera y verano, los cantantes y guitarristas Joe Strummer y Mick Jones, el bajista Paul Simonon y el bateria Topper Headon pasaron tres meses en un garaje ensayando y grabando demos con temas del que seria su tercer disco.
- "Solo tenia una bombilla y moqueta en las paredes para insonorizar", recordaba Strummer. "Nos sentíamos como si nos estuviéramos deslizando al vació por una cuerda y nos agarrábamos con las uñas", dijo, "Y no había nadie para ayudarnos".
El aliento audaz de las 15 canciones de "Calling" de fe de la velocidad y el fervor de corresponsal de guerra con que Strummer y Jones trabajaban juntos:
- "Joe escribía las letras a máquina mientras yo componía música al ritmo del ruido de las teclas". Contó Jones.
Una noticia sobre un ataque terrorista en el Mediterraneo inspiró "Spanish Bombs".
"Lost in the Supermarket" estaba basada en la existencia absurda de Jones en aquel momento: era una estrella del rock que vivía en un piso de protección oficial con su madre.
El productor Guy Stevens, célebre por sus excentricidades transformó el candor del grupo en munición perfecta para los directos.
Tristemente, este fue su último trabajo: una caída por las escaleras acabó con su vida poco después de que se editara, en 1980.

Bold encouragement of the 15 songs of "Calling" on the speed of faith and fervor of a war correspondent that Strummer and Jones worked together: - "Joe wrote letters to the machine while I composed music to the rhythm of the noise of the keys." Jones counted. A story about a terrorist attack in the Mediterranean inspired "Spanish Bombs." "Lost in the Supermarket" was based on the existence of Jones absurd at the time: it was a rock star who lived in an apartment security officer with his mother. The producer Guy Stevens, famous for its eccentricities transformed the candor of the group as perfect for the live ammunition. Sadly, this was his last work: a fall down the stairs with his life ended shortly after it was edited in 1980.
